About

Madeline Triffon is a pioneering American wine specialist and sommelier. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, she spent part of her childhood in Greece before returning to the U.S. She worked her way through college in the food industry, initially with no intention of becoming a sommelier. However, her career took a significant turn when she was offered a sommelier position at age 21, thanks to her French accent. Triffon's journey led her to become the first American woman to pass the Master Sommelier exam in 1987, marking a significant milestone in her career. Triffon has had a profound impact on the Detroit restaurant scene, notably as the sommelier at the London Chop House and later as the wine director for several prominent establishments. She has been recognized with numerous awards, including being named Wine and Spirits Professional of the Year by iSanté in 1999. Currently, she works with Plum Market, where she directs wine events and educates consumers. Her contributions to wine education and service have been influential, earning her the nickname "Detroit's First Lady of Wine." Triffon's legacy extends beyond her achievements, as she continues to inspire and mentor aspiring sommeliers.
