Makira Natural Park Project

Conservation project

About

The Makira Natural Park Project is a comprehensive conservation initiative located in Madagascar's northeastern region. It safeguards one of the largest remaining rainforests in the country, encompassing 372,470 hectares of strictly protected forest and over 350,000 hectares of community-managed forests. This biodiversity hotspot is home to a diverse array of species, including 17 lemur species and numerous endemic bird species. The project supports local communities by promoting sustainable livelihoods and providing environmental education. The project focuses on community engagement, sustainable agriculture, and health initiatives. It helps communities adopt alternative farming methods and supports eco-tourism and cash crop production. Additionally, it offers health services and education, improving the overall well-being of local residents. By conserving the forest, the project also protects watersheds and prevents habitat loss, contributing to both environmental conservation and community development. The Makira Natural Park is managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society in collaboration with the Government of Madagascar.
