Markbygden Wind Farm
LocationAbout
Markbygden Wind Farm is located in northern Sweden, near Piteå, and is one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world. It spans over 450 square kilometers and will consist of up to 1,101 wind turbines upon completion. The project is divided into three phases, with the aim of achieving a total energy capacity of up to 4,000 megawatts. This strategic location exploits the natural acceleration of wind over hills, maximizing energy production, especially during winter months when electricity demand is high. The wind farm is connected to the national grid via 400 kV cables, ensuring efficient distribution of electricity across Sweden. It is expected to produce between 8 and 12 terawatt-hours of electricity annually, contributing significantly to Sweden's renewable energy goals and reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 8 million tonnes per year. The project involves several international partners and represents a major step towards sustainable energy production in Europe.
