Mendizorroza Stadium
Mendizorroza Stadium Mendizorroza Stadium, located in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, is the historic home ground of Deportivo Alavés. Opened on April 27, 1924, it is the third oldest professional football stadium in Spain, after El Molinón and Mestalla. Originally modest, the stadium began with a pitch and a covered wooden main stand. Over the decades, it underwent multiple renovations, including the addition of new stands, roofing, lighting in 1971, and a radio tower in the early 1950s to facilitate match broadcasts. Its most significant modernization occurred in 1997-1999, when the stadium was expanded and transformed into a fully enclosed venue with single-tier, covered stands, raising the capacity to approximately 19,840 seats. The current stadium features four stands linked by cantilevered corner sections, all covered by roofs dating from the late 1990s and early 2000s, providing a unified and modern appearance reminiscent of some English stadiums. The main southern stand, built in 2000, houses club offices and player facilities. Mendizorroza has hosted notable matches beyond club football, including Basque Country national team games in 1980 and 2018. Plans for further expansion to increase capacity to 28,000 were announced in 2016 but delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The stadium remains a symbol of Deportivo Alavés’ identity and history, combining tradition with modern amenities.
