The microwave oven is a household appliance that revolutionized cooking by utilizing microwave energy to heat and cook food quickly. Its development began during World War II, based on radar technology. Percy Spencer, an American engineer, accidentally discovered the heating effect of microwaves when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted near a radar set. He experimented with microwaves to cook popcorn and eggs, leading to the creation of the first microwave oven. Microwave ovens use radio waves at a frequency of approximately 2,450 megahertz to heat food. They are efficient for reheating leftovers and cooking certain types of food. The first commercial microwave, the Radarange, was introduced in 1947 but was large and expensive. Smaller, affordable models became available in the late 1960s, leading to widespread adoption in households. Today, microwaves are a common appliance in kitchens worldwide, offering convenience and speed in meal preparation.
