Myanmar People’s Defense Forces (PDFs)

Military organization

About

The People's Defense Forces (PDFs) in Myanmar were formed on May 5, 2021, by the National Unity Government (NUG) in response to the military coup that occurred on February 1, 2021. The PDFs are primarily composed of youths and pro-democracy activists. Their main objectives include ending internal conflicts, reforming the security sector, and establishing a federal union force. The PDFs operate under civilian control, with the Ministry of Defense overseeing their activities. The PDFs have grown significantly, employing guerrilla warfare tactics against the military junta. They are divided into regional commands and have collaborated with ethnic armed organizations. Despite lacking heavy equipment, the PDFs have shown resilience and tactical ingenuity. Estimates suggest that the PDFs have between 65,000 to 100,000 members, though not all are fully armed or trained. The PDFs have been designated as a terrorist organization by the military junta, but they remain a crucial part of the resistance movement against the regime.
