About

The National Book Award for Poetry is one of the most prestigious literary honors in the United States, recognizing outstanding poetry collections published annually. Established in 1950, it is part of the National Book Awards, which celebrate excellence in American literature across various categories. The award is managed by the National Book Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting literary works and fostering a broader audience for books. Each year, a panel of five distinguished judges selects a Longlist of ten poetry collections, which is then narrowed down to five Finalists. The winner receives $10,000 and a bronze sculpture, while Finalists receive $1,000, a medal, and a citation. The award ceremony takes place in the fall, celebrating the best poetry published between December 1 of the previous year and November 30 of the current year. This process highlights the rich diversity and creativity in contemporary American poetry.
