LocationAbout
Oymyakon, located in the Sakha Republic of Russia, is the coldest permanently inhabited settlement on Earth. Situated in the Yana-Oymyakon Highlands along the Indigirka River, it is part of the Oymyakonsky District. The village's name is derived from the Even word for "unfrozen patch of water," which refers to thermal springs that remain unfrozen during the harsh winters. Oymyakon's extreme subarctic climate, classified as Dfd, features average January temperatures around -50°C and record lows as low as -71.2°C. The local economy is primarily based on fur trading and ice fishing. Despite its remote and inhospitable climate, Oymyakon attracts tourists interested in experiencing its unique environment. The village is near the historic Road of Bones and hosts a festival celebrating the indigenous culture and traditions of the area. Residents mainly live in simple homes heated by coal and wood, with limited modern amenities. The population has declined significantly over the years, from about 2,500 to fewer than 900 inhabitants. Oymyakon's extreme conditions make it a fascinating and challenging place to live.
