Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili

Artistic collaboration

About

Pablo Picasso and Gjon Mili's collaboration is a remarkable example of artistic innovation. In 1949, Mili, a renowned photographer and lighting expert, visited Picasso in Southern France. He showcased his experiments with light and movement, inspiring Picasso to explore light painting. Using a small electric light in a dark room, Picasso created ephemeral artworks in the air, which Mili captured through long exposures. This technique allowed them to record the light trails left by Picasso's movements, resulting in over thirty iconic images known as "light drawings." Their collaboration spanned five sessions, producing images of centaurs, bulls, and human figures. The photographs were exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1950. This project not only highlighted Picasso's versatility but also Mili's innovative use of photography. Their work together pushed the boundaries of art and photography, showcasing the potential of light as a creative medium. The collaboration remains a testament to the power of interdisciplinary experimentation and artistic vision.
