The origins of parkour can be traced back to the 18th century, when French military officers would train in urban environments to improve their agility and combat skills. However, it wasn't until the 1980s that parkour as we know it today began to take shape, with practitioners like David Belle and Sébastien Foucan popularizing the sport through their films and demonstrations. Today, parkour is practiced by people all over the world, from recreational enthusiasts to professional athletes, and has evolved to include a range of disciplines, from freerunning to obstacle course racing.
