Polly Pocket

Toy

About

Polly Pocket is a toy line of small plastic dolls and accessories that originated in the United Kingdom. The concept was first designed by Chris Wiggs in 1983 for his daughter Kate, using a powder compact to create a tiny house for a small doll. Bluebird Toys licensed the idea and began selling Polly Pocket in 1989. The original toys featured compact cases that opened into miniature playsets, allowing children to engage in imaginative play with dolls less than an inch tall. The brand evolved significantly over the years. In 1998, Mattel acquired Bluebird Toys and redesigned Polly Pocket, introducing larger dolls with more realistic features. Later, Mattel launched "Fashion Polly" with jointed dolls and rubbery clothing. Despite changes, the original miniature design remains iconic. In 2018, Mattel relaunched Polly Pocket with a focus on the classic small size and playsets, appealing to both nostalgic adults and new generations of children.
