About

Richard Dove Williams Jr. is an American former tennis coach, born on February 14, 1942, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He is best known as the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams. Williams' interest in tennis began after seeing a French Open broadcast, which inspired him to create a plan for his daughters to become tennis champions. He started coaching Venus and Serena at a young age, using public courts in Compton, California, despite facing challenges from gang activity. Williams' coaching style was unconventional, as he emphasized fun and learning while removing his daughters from traditional junior circuits. His methods, although criticized, led to significant success for both Venus and Serena. Williams has been open about his experiences with racism and has written books on his life and tennis. He currently resides in Atlanta, dealing with health issues after suffering strokes. Despite personal challenges, Williams' legacy in tennis remains strong, having shaped two of the sport's greatest players.
