Rohtang Pass
LocationRohtang Pass is a high mountain pass located in the Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas, approximately 51 kilometers from Manali in Himachal Pradesh, India. It connects the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys, serving as a natural divide between two distinct cultural regions: the Hindu-dominated Kullu Valley and the Buddhist-influenced Lahaul and Spiti Valleys. The pass is known for its challenging drive, featuring narrow cliffside passages and unpredictable weather conditions, including snowstorms and blizzards. Rohtang Pass offers breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and is a popular destination for adventure sports like skiing, snowboarding, and paragliding. The pass is open from May to November, although it remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall. The construction of the Atal Tunnel has provided an alternative route, reducing travel time significantly. Rohtang Pass is not only a scenic location but also a significant cultural and historical site, having served as an ancient trade route between the regions on either side of the Pir Panjal Range.
