Ron Paul is an American politician and physician, born on August 20, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Gettysburg College with a degree in biology in 1957 and later received his medical degree from Duke University in 1961. Paul served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard before establishing a successful obstetrics and gynecology practice in Texas. His entry into politics was motivated by economic concerns, particularly the abandonment of the gold standard. Paul served in the U.S. House of Representatives over three periods: 1976–77, 1979–85, and 1997–2013. He ran for president three times, including as a Libertarian candidate in 1988 and as a Republican in 2008 and 2012. Paul is known for his advocacy of limited government, free-market economics, and individual privacy. He has written several books, including Freedom Under Siege and The Revolution: A Manifesto. His son, Rand Paul, is also a prominent figure in U.S. politics, serving as a U.S. Senator.
