Saint Pierre & Miquelon

Territory

About

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a French overseas territorial collectivity located in the North Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. It consists of an archipelago of eight islands, with Miquelon being the largest and Saint-Pierre serving as the administrative and commercial center. The islands have a total area of 242 square kilometers and a population of approximately 5,819 as of 2022. The residents are French citizens and maintain strong cultural ties to France. The economy of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is primarily based on fishing, although efforts are being made to diversify into tourism. The islands have a mild, humid climate with significant precipitation and mist. Historically, the islands have changed hands between France and Britain several times before becoming permanently French in 1814. Today, they are part of the Eurozone and enjoy European Union citizenship, despite not being part of the Schengen area or the European customs territory.
