Saola
Animal speciesAbout
The Saola, known as the "Asian Unicorn," is a critically endangered species native to the Annamite Mountains on the border of Vietnam and Laos. Discovered in 1992, it is one of the most recently found large mammals. The Saola resembles an antelope but is more closely related to wild cattle. It is characterized by its distinctive white facial markings, large maxillary glands, and parallel, sharply-pointed horns found in both males and females, which can grow up to 50 cm in length. Saolas are herbivores, primarily feeding on leaves, fruits, and grasses near water sources. They are secretive and rarely seen, with no formal surveys conducted. Threats include hunting for their horns, habitat loss due to deforestation, and accidental trapping in snares. Conservation efforts focus on protecting their habitat and establishing protected areas. The Saola's elusiveness and rarity have earned it the nickname "Asian Unicorn," highlighting its mystique and the urgent need for conservation.
