Shepherds Flat Wind Farm

Wind farm

About

Shepherds Flat Wind Farm is a significant renewable energy project located in eastern Oregon, spanning across both Gilliam and Morrow counties. It is one of the largest wind farms in the United States, with a total capacity of 845 megawatts. The farm features 338 General Electric (GE) 2.5xl wind turbines, each capable of producing 2.5 megawatts of electricity. This project was developed by Caithness Energy and supported by major investors including GE Energy Financial Services, Google, ITOCHU, and Sumitomo Corporation. The wind farm generates approximately 1.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, which is enough to power over 235,000 homes. It helps reduce carbon emissions by about 1 million metric tons each year. The project had a substantial economic impact, creating 400 construction jobs and 35 permanent positions. It also benefits Oregon economically with an estimated annual contribution of $16 million. The electricity generated is sold to Southern California Edison under a long-term agreement, supporting California's renewable energy goals.
