Sonia Rykiel
PersonAbout
Sonia Rykiel was a French fashion designer and writer, born on May 25, 1930, in Neuilly-sur-Seine. She is renowned as the "Queen of Knits" for her innovative knitwear designs. Rykiel's career began when she couldn't find suitable maternity clothes during her pregnancy, leading her to design her own garments. Her "Poor Boy Sweater," with its modern fit and high armholes, gained fame after being featured on the cover of French Elle magazine. This success propelled her to open her first boutique in 1968. Rykiel's designs were known for their unpretentious, modern style, often featuring stripes and slogans. She empowered women through fashion by creating clothes that were both liberating and practical. Beyond fashion, Rykiel was a prolific writer, publishing her first book in 1979. She collaborated in music and film projects, including a cameo in Robert Altman's Prêt-à-Porter. Rykiel passed away on August 25, 2016, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering designer who revolutionized knitwear and inspired generations of women.
