About

Sonja Henie's dominance in figure skating is unparalleled. Born on April 8, 1912, in Oslo, Norway, she began skating at a young age and quickly rose to prominence. Henie won the Oslo children's championship at eight and the Norwegian national championship at ten. Her Olympic career started at the 1924 Winter Games, where she was just 11 years old. She went on to win three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936, along with ten consecutive World Championships from 1927 to 1936. Henie's success extended beyond her athletic achievements. She revolutionized figure skating by incorporating ballet into her routines and popularized the sport with her charisma and style. Her influence on fashion was also significant, as she introduced the short skirt and white skates look that remains iconic today. After retiring from competitive skating, Henie became a Hollywood star, starring in numerous films and performing in ice shows. Her legacy includes founding the Henie-Onstad Art Centre in Norway with her husband, Niels Onstad. Henie passed away on October 12, 1969, but her impact on figure skating and entertainment remains enduring.
