Sweden is the largest Nordic country, located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in northern Europe. Sweden has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with the Svear and Geats being ancient inhabitants. It became a unified state in the late 10th century and was part of the Kalmar Union before becoming an empire in the 17th century. Today, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, known for its advanced welfare state and high standard of living. It is a leader in social welfare, gender equality, and environmental policies. Sweden joined the EU in 1995 and NATO in 2024. The country is divided into three main regions: Norrland, Svealand, and Götaland. Its landscape is characterized by vast forests, numerous lakes, and a long coastline. Sweden is also renowned for its contributions to sports, including tennis, where legendary players like Bjorn Borg have made significant impacts.
