Martial artAbout
Taekwondo is a Korean martial art known for its emphasis on striking techniques, particularly kicks. It combines physical movements with mental discipline, emphasizing speed, agility, and strength. The word "Taekwondo" translates to "the art of hand and foot fighting," reflecting its focus on both kicking and punching techniques. Taekwondo has a rich history, with roots tracing back to ancient Korean martial arts such as Taekkyeon and Kwon Bup. Modern Taekwondo developed in the 1950s from various martial arts schools called "kwans," influenced by Japanese and Chinese martial arts. It became an Olympic sport in 2000 and is governed by World Taekwondo. Taekwondo includes forms (patterns), sparring, and breaking techniques, with a strong emphasis on kicking, flexibility, and balance. Its practice promotes physical fitness, self-defense skills, and mental discipline, making it a popular martial art globally.
