Taeuber-Arp and Arp
Artist coupleAbout
Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Jean Arp were a pioneering artist couple deeply embedded in the Dada movement. Born in 1889 in Davos, Switzerland, Sophie was a versatile artist known for her contributions to textiles, modern dance, and sculpture. She met Jean Arp, a German-French artist, in Zurich in 1915. Together, they were central figures in the avant-garde scene, influencing each other's work and collaborating on numerous projects. Their artistic partnership flourished through various mediums, including textiles, paintings, and sculptures. Taeuber-Arp's geometric abstractions and Arp's organic forms blended in their joint works. They were involved in key Dada projects, such as the Cabaret Voltaire. Taeuber-Arp's notable works include her "Dada Heads," while Arp's poetry and sculptures remain iconic. Their collaboration spanned decades until Sophie's untimely death in 1943. Despite initial overshadowing by her husband, Sophie's contributions are now recognized as equally significant.
