Tasers

Technology

About

Tasers are handheld devices used primarily by law enforcement to incapacitate individuals temporarily. They work by firing two small darts connected to the device via thin wires, which can reach targets up to 35 feet away. These darts penetrate clothing and deliver a 50,000-volt electric shock, disrupting the nervous system and causing muscle contractions that lead to temporary incapacitation. The technology was inspired by the science fiction novel Tom Swift and His Electric Rifle and was developed by Jack Cover in the 1970s. Tasers are considered non-lethal weapons, using compressed nitrogen to launch the darts, which avoids firearm classification. However, their use has been controversial due to associated deaths and concerns about racial disparities in deployment. Despite these issues, Tasers remain widely used, with over 90% of U.S. law enforcement agencies employing them. They are seen as alternatives to lethal force, aiming to reduce injuries and preserve lives during confrontations. The technology continues to evolve, with newer models offering improved safety features and data recording capabilities.
