Hiking trailAbout
Te Araroa Trail is a long-distance hiking route that spans the length of New Zealand, covering approximately 3,000 kilometers from Cape Reinga in the North Island to Bluff in the South Island. The trail offers a diverse range of landscapes, including towering mountain ranges, scenic coastlines, and expansive plains. It passes through both rural and urban areas, allowing hikers to experience the full spectrum of New Zealand's natural beauty and cultural diversity. The trail is known for its challenging terrain, which includes high mountain passes, river crossings, and sections of road walking. Despite these challenges, Te Araroa is accessible to hikers of various experience levels, with many choosing to complete the trail in sections over several years. The trail is managed by the Te Araroa Trust, which works to maintain and enhance the route while promoting sustainable practices and community engagement. Each year, about 2,000 hikers complete the entire trail, while many more enjoy sections of it.
