Teeth Whitening
Medical procedureAbout
Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure designed to lighten the color of teeth by removing stains and discoloration. It can be performed in a dental office or at home using various products. The most common method involves applying a gel containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to the teeth. This gel breaks down into free radicals that penetrate the tooth enamel, breaking down stain molecules and resulting in a whiter appearance. Professional in-office whitening is faster and more effective, often taking about an hour. It involves protecting the gums with a barrier and using a light to accelerate the process. Results can last several months to years, depending on lifestyle factors like diet and smoking. At-home kits are also available but are less effective and require longer treatment times. Whitening is not suitable for dental restorations like crowns or veneers and may not be effective on gray or tetracycline-stained teeth. Common side effects include temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.
