Terra

Blockchain

About

Terra is a blockchain protocol and payment platform that focuses on algorithmic stablecoins. Developed by Terraform Labs, it was launched in 2019 with the goal of providing a stable and efficient payment system. Terra utilizes a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, which involves validators staking the native cryptocurrency, LUNA, to secure the network and validate transactions. This mechanism allows for low fees and fast transaction processing, making it suitable for cross-border payments. Terra's ecosystem includes several stablecoins, such as TerraUSD (UST), which was pegged to the U.S. dollar. However, the collapse of UST in 2022 led to significant financial losses. Despite this, Terra's network supports various decentralized applications (dApps) like Anchor and Mirror, offering services such as lending and synthetic asset creation. The platform aims to be interoperable with other blockchains, enhancing its utility in the broader cryptocurrency landscape.
