The LaLaurie House

Historical location

About

The LaLaurie House, located at 1140 Royal Street in New Orleans' French Quarter, is a historical mansion infamous for its dark past. Built in 1832 by Madame Delphine LaLaurie and her third husband, Dr. Louis LaLaurie, it was once a symbol of wealth and high society. However, beneath its elegant facade, the mansion concealed a sinister reality. Madame LaLaurie was known for mistreating her slaves, but the full extent of her cruelty was only revealed after a fire in 1834 exposed a chamber of horrors. The fire led to the discovery of enslaved people subjected to gruesome torture and mutilation. This revelation sparked public outrage, leading to a mob attack on the mansion. Madame LaLaurie fled to Paris, where she lived until her death in 1849. Today, the mansion is renowned for its haunted reputation, with reports of paranormal activity and ghostly apparitions. Despite its dark history, it remains a significant landmark in New Orleans, attracting both history enthusiasts and those interested in the paranormal. The mansion is privately owned and not open to the public, but its exterior is a popular stop on ghost tours.
