AC Milan dominated the first half, scoring three goals through Paolo Maldini and a brace from Hernán Crespo, leaving Liverpool trailing 3-0 at halftime. In the second half, Liverpool staged an incredible turnaround, scoring three goals in six minutes. Steven Gerrard, Vladimír Šmicer, and Xabi Alonso were the scorers, with Alonso converting a rebounded penalty. The match ended 3-3 after extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.
