The Stanley Hotel
LocationAbout
The Stanley Hotel is a historic 140-room Colonial Revival hotel located in Estes Park, Colorado. It was built by Freelan Oscar Stanley, co-founder of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, and opened on July 4, 1909. Initially designed as a luxury resort for upper-class Easterners and a health retreat for those suffering from tuberculosis, the hotel quickly became a popular destination. Notably, it was the first all-electric hotel in the world, including its kitchen, when it opened. The hotel is famous for inspiring Stephen King's novel The Shining, following his stay in Room 217. The hotel's architecture and surroundings have contributed to its reputation for paranormal activity. Guests often report strange occurrences, and the hotel offers themed packages and events, enhancing its allure as a haunted destination. Today, The Stanley Hotel remains a prominent tourist attraction, offering panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains and Lake Estes, while maintaining its historical charm and opulence.
