Historical site

About

The Walls of Carcassonne are renowned medieval fortifications located in the French city of Carcassonne, Occitanie region. Founded during the Gallo-Roman period, these walls have witnessed numerous historical epochs, including Roman, Visigothic, and Crusader occupations. The fortifications consist of double surrounding walls, approximately 3 kilometers long, interspersed with 52 towers. This architectural marvel reflects the strategic defensive adaptations made over centuries, particularly after the Albigensian Crusade in the 13th century. Restored by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century, the walls of Carcassonne are celebrated for their historical significance and architectural integrity. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997. The fortifications showcase a blend of medieval military engineering and architectural styles, making them one of Europe's finest examples of medieval defensive structures. Today, they are a major tourist attraction and a testament to the region's rich history.
