Tidal power is a renewable energy source that leverages the natural rise and fall of ocean tides to generate electricity. This energy is harnessed through two primary methods: tidal barrages and tidal stream systems. Tidal barrages involve constructing a dam-like structure across an estuary or bay, creating a reservoir that fills during high tide and empties during low tide, driving turbines to produce electricity. Tidal stream systems, on the other hand, utilize underwater turbines to capture the kinetic energy of fast-moving tidal currents, similar to how wind turbines operate. Tidal power offers several advantages, including predictability and reliability, as tidal cycles can be forecasted with high accuracy. It is also a clean energy source, producing no greenhouse gas emissions. However, challenges include high upfront costs and limited suitable locations. Despite these challenges, tidal power holds significant potential for contributing to global renewable energy capacity, particularly in regions with substantial tidal ranges. Existing projects, such as the Sihwa Lake Tidal Power Station in South Korea and the La Rance Tidal Power Station in France, demonstrate its feasibility.
