Born Chloe Ardelia Wofford on February 18, 1931, in Lorain, Ohio, she was raised in a working-class family. Morrison graduated from Howard University in 1953 and earned a master's degree from Cornell University in 1955. She began her career as a teacher and later became an editor at Random House, where she promoted the work of several African American writers. Morrison's literary career flourished with the publication of her first novel, The Bluest Eye, in 1970. Her subsequent works, including Song of Solomon, Beloved, and Jazz, solidified her position as a leading figure in American literature.
