About

Trees for Life is a conservation charity dedicated to rewilding the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1986 by Alan Watson Featherstone, it began practical work in 1989 and registered as an independent charity in 1993. The organization's mission is to restore the Caledonian Forest, which once covered much of Scotland but now remains in only a small fraction of its original extent. Trees for Life has planted nearly 2 million native trees, aiming to restore 10% of the forest's former extent over a 250-year vision. Trees for Life operates across several sites, including the Dundreggan Estate, a 10,000-acre area purchased in 2008 for forest restoration. The charity collaborates with other organizations to promote biodiversity and support local communities. Its efforts have led to significant ecological improvements, such as the return of golden eagles to breed in the area after 40 years. The organization also engages in innovative projects like using wild boar to control bracken and restore woodland diversity. Trees for Life's work contributes to climate mitigation and supports nature-based solutions to achieve net-zero emissions.
