The University of Sarajevo is a public institution located in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the largest and oldest university in the country, tracing its origins back to 1537 as an Islamic madrasa. The modern university was formally established in 1949, playing a pivotal role in the development of higher education in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It comprises 20 faculties, three academies, and three faculties of theology, offering a wide range of academic programs. The university has a rich history marked by resilience and international collaboration. It endured significant challenges during the siege of Sarajevo but continued to operate despite hardships. Post-war reconstruction efforts have included physical rebuilding and academic reforms, aligning with European standards through the Bologna Process. Today, the University of Sarajevo is a key cultural and educational center in the region, contributing to the country's development and serving as a model for resilience and academic excellence.
