Waipoua Forest
LocationAbout
Waipoua Forest, located on the west coast of New Zealand's Northland region, is renowned for its ancient kauri trees. It is the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland, offering a glimpse into an ancient green world teeming with towering trees and rare birds. The forest is home to Tāne Mahuta, New Zealand's largest known living kauri tree, and Te Matua Ngahere, another giant estimated to be between 2,500 and 3,000 years old. These trees have been preserved since the forest was declared a sanctuary in 1952. Visitors can explore the forest via easy walking tracks, including the Tāne Mahuta Walk, which is accessible for buggies and wheelchairs. The forest supports a diverse ecosystem, including the North Island brown kiwi and the endangered North Island kōkako. However, kauri dieback disease poses a significant threat, and visitors are required to follow strict guidelines to protect these iconic trees. The Waipoua Forest Trust and local communities work together to maintain the forest's health and ensure its continued beauty for future generations.
