Bishnoi Movement
Social movementAbout
The Bishnoi Movement is one of the earliest environmental movements in India, initiated by the Bishnoi community in Rajasthan. Founded by Guru Jambheshwar in the 15th century, the Bishnois follow 29 principles that emphasize environmental conservation and non-violence. In 1730, a significant event occurred when the Maharaja of Jodhpur ordered the cutting of Khejri trees for a new palace. Amrita Devi Bishnoi and her family, along with other villagers, hugged the trees to prevent their felling, leading to the sacrifice of 363 lives. This movement marked a pioneering effort in environmental protection, inspiring later movements like the Chipko Movement. The Bishnois are known for their deep reverence for nature and wildlife, prohibiting actions like tree cutting and animal killing. Their legacy includes significant contributions to environmental activism and conservation in Rajasthan. The movement's impact led to a royal decree protecting trees in Bishnoi villages, and it continues to inspire environmental initiatives today.
