Covering Coughs and Sneezes
Health conceptAbout
Covering coughs and sneezes is a crucial practice for preventing the spread of respiratory viruses. When you cough or sneeze, tiny droplets containing germs are released into the air, potentially infecting others nearby. These droplets can travel significant distances and remain airborne for a while, increasing the risk of transmission. By covering your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow, you effectively trap these droplets and reduce the spread of germs. Proper technique involves using a tissue to cover your mouth and nose during a cough or sneeze, then disposing of it properly. If a tissue is not available, sneezing into the crook of your elbow is the next best option. Afterward, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. This practice, combined with staying home when ill and avoiding close contact with others, significantly reduces the transmission of respiratory illnesses like influenza and COVID-19. Regular hand hygiene and avoiding touching your face also play key roles in preventing the spread of germs.
