Sporting eventAbout
The Ironman World Championship is a premier triathlon event held annually in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Established in 1978, it has become the pinnacle of triathlon competitions worldwide. The race consists of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, totaling 140.6 miles. Athletes must complete these segments within strict time limits, typically 16 to 17 hours, to earn the title of Ironman. The championship is known for its challenging conditions, including the hot lava fields and strong winds of the Big Island. Participation is by qualification only, with athletes competing in various Ironman events globally to secure a spot. The event attracts over 2,000 top triathletes each year, making it a spectacle of endurance and athleticism. The 2024 men's championship took place in Kona, while the women's event was held in Nice, France, as part of a new rotation schedule.
