About

Karate is a martial art that originated in the Ryukyu Kingdom, now part of Japan, particularly in Okinawa. It evolved from indigenous Okinawan martial arts, known as te or tī, under the influence of Chinese martial arts. Karate emphasizes empty-handed techniques, although some styles may incorporate weapons. It is primarily a striking art, involving punches, kicks, and defensive blocking. Karate practitioners, known as karateka, focus on improving physical skills and mental discipline through rigorous training. Karate has evolved into various styles, such as Shotokan, Goju-ryu, Shito-ryu, and Wado-ryu. It is practiced globally as a sport, art, and self-defense discipline. Gichin Funakoshi is often credited with popularizing karate in Japan and worldwide. Karate's inclusion in the Olympic Games in 2020 further increased its global recognition. The martial art emphasizes not only physical prowess but also personal development and character building, reflecting its broader philosophy as a way of life, or karate-dō.
