Mediterranean Sea
Body of waterAbout
The Mediterranean Sea is a semi-enclosed body of water located between Europe, Africa, and Asia. It covers an area of approximately 2.5 million square kilometers and is connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Strait of Gibraltar. The sea is divided into two main basins: the Western and Eastern Mediterranean, connected by the Strait of Sicily. Its average depth is about 1,500 meters, with the deepest point being the Calypso Deep in the Ionian Sea at 5,267 meters. The Mediterranean is known for its diverse ecosystems and biodiversity, influenced by its unique climate and geography. However, it faces significant environmental challenges, including pollution from sewage and industrial waste, which impact marine life. The region's high population density and tourism contribute to these issues. Despite these challenges, the Mediterranean remains a vital component of global marine ecosystems, supporting a wide range of marine species and playing a crucial role in regional climate and economic activities.
