Mesoamerican Barrier Reef

Location

About

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, also known as the Mayan Reef, is the largest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere and the second largest globally. It stretches over 700 miles along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. This vast ecosystem supports over 65 species of stony coral and more than 500 species of fish, making it a vital habitat for numerous marine organisms. The reef system includes diverse ecosystems such as mangroves, sea grass, and estuaries, providing critical habitats for species like manatees, sea turtles, and whale sharks. However, it faces significant threats from climate change, overfishing, pollution, and coastal development. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this biodiversity hotspot, including the establishment of marine protected areas. The reef's health is crucial for both marine life and the livelihoods of local communities.
