Meteor Crater Impact

Landmark

About

Meteor Crater, also known as Barringer Crater, is a well-preserved impact crater located in northern Arizona, USA. It was formed approximately 50,000 years ago when an iron-nickel asteroid, estimated to be about 30 to 50 meters in diameter, struck the Earth's surface. The impact excavated a crater roughly 1.2 kilometers in diameter and initially about 210 meters deep, though erosion has reduced its depth to around 170 meters. The crater is renowned for its preservation due to the arid climate of the Colorado Plateau. It serves as a significant site for studying impact cratering processes. The impact would have had devastating regional effects, vaporizing the asteroid and local fauna, and causing massive shockwaves. Despite its age, Meteor Crater remains an important landmark for scientific research and education.
