Montserrat
TerritoryAbout
Montserrat is a British Overseas Territory located in the Caribbean Sea, part of the Lesser Antilles chain. It is often referred to as the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean" due to its lush green landscapes and Irish ancestry. The island spans approximately 39.5 square miles, with a rugged volcanic landscape featuring three mountainous areas: the Silver Hills, Centre Hills, and Soufrière Hills. The Soufrière Hills Volcano, active since 1995, has significantly impacted the island's geography and population. The population of Montserrat is around 4,300 residents, a significant decrease from over 10,000 before the volcanic eruptions. The de facto capital is Brades, while Plymouth remains the de jure capital. The island's economy and infrastructure have been rebuilt gradually, with a focus on sustainability. Montserrat's diverse ecological habitats include black sand beaches, coral reefs, and subtropical woodlands. Despite the challenges posed by the volcano, the island is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, blending African, North American, and European influences.
