Person

About

Porfirio Díaz was a Mexican general and politician who dominated Mexico's history from 1876 to 1911. Born on September 15, 1830, in Oaxaca, Mexico, he rose to prominence through his military career and later became president. Díaz implemented significant modernization policies, promoting economic growth by attracting foreign investment and developing infrastructure such as railways and public works. Díaz's rule, known as the Porfiriato, brought political stability but also repression. He centralized power, rewarding supporters and punishing opponents. His policies led to economic disparities, with wealth concentrated among a few. Despite these challenges, Díaz's legacy includes the establishment of institutions and promotion of foreign trade. His regime ultimately ended with the Mexican Revolution in 1911, leading to his exile and death in Paris on July 2, 1915.
