The Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata), also known as the Puerto Rican Amazon, is a vibrant, predominantly green parrot endemic to Puerto Rico. It measures 28–30 cm in length and features a bright red forehead, white rings around the eyes, and blue primary wing feathers. This species is significant due to its unique cultural and ecological role in Puerto Rico, serving as a symbol of national pride and conservation efforts. Historically, the parrot's population drastically declined due to habitat loss and other human activities. However, through concerted conservation efforts, including captive breeding programs and habitat protection, the population has increased from near extinction to around 400 individuals. The parrots are cavity nesters, relying on tree cavities for nesting, and their diet consists of fruits, flowers, and other forest materials. Conservation efforts continue to protect this critically endangered species, aiming to ensure its survival and recovery in the wild.
