The Bald Parrot (Pyrilia aurantiocephala), also known as the Orange-headed Parrot, is a unique species of parrot found in the east-central Amazon region of Brazil. It is characterized by its medium-small size, approximately 23 cm in length, and its distinctive bald, brownish-orange head. The parrot's body is predominantly green, with a lighter yellow tint on the wings and blue undertones on the belly. Its red underwing coverts are visible during flight, adding to its vibrant appearance. The Bald Parrot inhabits tropical moist lowland forests, specifically in the Lower River Madeira and Upper River Tapajós regions. Its diet consists of flowers, seeds, fruits, and insects. The species is considered near threatened due to deforestation, which reduces its habitat. Initially mistaken for a juvenile Vulturine Parrot, the Bald Parrot was recognized as a distinct species in 2002. It communicates with high-pitched sounds and is known for its unique head coloration, distinguishing it from other parrot species.
