CountryAbout
Tuvalu is a small island nation located in the west-central Pacific Ocean, comprising nine coral islands. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978. The capital, Vaiaku, is situated on Fongafale islet within Funafuti Atoll. Tuvalu's population is approximately 9,700 people, with the majority being Polynesian. The official currency is the Tuvaluan dollar, though the Australian dollar is also widely used. The economy relies on subsistence agriculture, fishing, and revenue from the sale of stamps and domain names. Tuvalu is a constitutional monarchy with King Charles III as the head of state, represented by a governor-general. The government is led by a prime minister. The country faces significant challenges due to its low elevation, making it vulnerable to rising sea levels and climate change. Traditional Tuvaluan culture is rich in music and dance, while Western influences are also prevalent. The country's limited resources and remote location pose ongoing challenges for its development and sustainability.
