The Clean Oceans Project
OrganizationAbout
The Clean Oceans Project, now known as Clean Oceans International (COI), is a non-profit organization dedicated to reducing oceanic plastic pollution through research, innovation, and direct action. Founded in 2008, COI initially focused on developing systems for locating, collecting, and recycling plastic from the ocean with minimal environmental impact. However, the original team disbanded due to funding issues. In 2015, Clean Oceans International was re-established with a new approach centered around Portable Plastic Waste Conversion (PPWC) technology. This technology aims to convert plastic waste into diesel fuel and other products, providing a financially attractive and environmentally friendly solution for managing plastic waste. COI's mission involves deploying PPWC systems globally to create localized recycling infrastructure. The organization conducts research through its Environmental Plastic Assessment Program (EPAP), which engages volunteers in data collection and awareness-raising activities. COI has organized numerous shoreline cleanups and expeditions worldwide, collecting over 60,298 pounds of debris since its inception. By emphasizing community engagement and innovative waste management, COI seeks to create a healthier marine environment free of plastic pollution. Its efforts are supported by partnerships and volunteer work, highlighting the power of collective action in addressing marine pollution.
